To become a teacher’s aide/assistant in Victoria, follow these steps:

1. Education and Qualifications:

There are two nationally accredited and recognised qualifications for teacher aides/assistants: CHC40221 Certificate IV in School Based Education Support and CHC30221 Certificate III in School Based Education Support. We recommend the Certificate IV qualification as the best for obtaining employment.  You can find information about our Certificate IV courses here:

2. Gain Relevant Experience:

Seek volunteer or part-time positions in schools, kindergartens, or childcare centres to develop skills and understanding of the education system.

You will also gain experience working as a Teacher Aide during your 100 hour practical placement as part of your Certificate IV course at Laverton. At LCEC we will find your placement for you.

3. APPLY FOR A WORKING WITH CHILDREN CHECK (WWCC):

The WWCC is a screening process for checking people who will be working with children. It checks criminal history and any relevant professional conduct findings on the record. You can apply for a WWCC through the Victorian Government’s Working with Children website: https://www.workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au/

When you enrol at LCEC, we will help you apply for your WWCC.

4. PREPARE YOUR APPLICATION

Build a resume and cover letter highlighting your experience, qualifications, and skills relevant to the role. Tailor your applications to each job, emphasising your ability to work with students, support teachers, and contribute to the learning environment.

5. SEARCH FOR JOB OPPORTUNITIES

Explore job openings in schools and other educational institutions across Victoria through online job boards, school websites, and government portals like Victorian Government Careers. https://careers.vic.gov.au/

LCEC graduates frequently find employment during their 100 hour practical placement.

6. ATTEND INTERVIEWS

Showcase your knowledge, skills, and experience during interviews. Research common questions and practice responses to demonstrate your suitability. Highlight your ability to collaborate with teachers, support student learning, and manage classroom activities.

7. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT:

Continually enhance your skills and knowledge through professional development opportunities. Stay updated on educational trends, attend workshops or conferences, and consider further qualifications.
